During the civil rights movement in the 70’s, Ron Stallworth ( John David Washington) becomes the first African American detective to join the Co- lorado Springs police department. Eager to prove his worth, he contacts the local Ku Klux Klan representatives by phone, pretending to be a white su- premacist. He immediately gets in the good graces of the organization lea- der. The bait is perfect except for one detail: Ron cannot attend the Klan’s meetings. He must then convince his Jewish partner Flip (Adam Driver) to go to the meetings on his behalf. As they infiltrate the organization, they slowly unveil a violent plan to attack the African-American social rights movement.
Spike Lee’s unparalleled vision shines strong and uncompromising in this gripping and sometimes hilarious thriller that has no qualms about abruptly shifting tones to highlight the horrors of racism. Filmed using the exquisite 35 mm format, so as to immerse the audience in the energy of that era, this story is based on real events and Lee sleekly places it in 2018 like a trigger for protest and a powerful wake-up call on the still valid racial conflict.
