Sal Fragione opens his pizza parlor on a hot summer Sunday in Brooklyn, as he has been doing for the past twenty-five years. The neighborhood has considerably changed since the day he opened, and its population is now mainly African-American and Hispanic. His son, Pino, hates the place and would much rather move the business to another neighborhood, but Sal feels the restaurant is an important part of his life and of his community. A customer walks in and starts interrogating Sal about his “Wall of Fame”, decorated with photos of famous Italian-Americans. He demands that Sal put up pictures of black celebrities since Sal’s pizzeria is in a black neighbor- hood. What started as a simple complaint soon escalates into a violent and racially fueled fight.
Do the Right Thing is the third feature film of our guest of honor Spike Lee which propelled him into the international spotlight, placing him as one of the most engaging American filmmakers and a benchmark in this country’s cinema. His sharp sense of humor and his critical view on his country’s racial tensions have become an emblematic part of his work.
