The Devil has introduced the notion of money into the world, so Fausto and Mephistopheles move to the Oaxacan coast. Fausto orders Mephistopheles to colonize and control nature through a seemingly never-ending building project. A far cry from Goethe’s Germany, Andrea Bussmann’s take on Faust intertwines with previous adaptations of the famous legend, adding to the mix the myths and realities that shape the collective imaginary of the Oaxacan coast.
The director offers us a whimsical tale of mythical characters, ghosts and witches, amidst a beautiful and hypnotic universe. One by one, many storytellers describe a past that refuses to sink into oblivion. This film is a warning to those who fail to measure the consequences of making deals with charming devils, as well as an avant-garde meditation about our addiction to storytelling.
