Jonas Åkerlund opens his film with a warning note: “Based on real events…and a bunch of lies”, dichotomy he sticks to all through Lords of Chaos. Euronymous (Rory Culkin) leads his music band to the top of the Scandinavian underground scene thanks to an innovative sound and a provocatively macabre aesthetic. When fellow musician Varg (Emory Cohen) takes his anti-Christian claims to heart by burning churches, the movement created by Euronymous gets out of control and his leadership is put into question.

An obscure coming of age, with some bittersweet hints of comedy, Lords of Chaos is a film that explores adolescent identity crisis in a very real context, as the crimes that inspired this film. The melancholic atmospheres created by Åkerlund, announce failure and tragedy, but they never bog down the narrative that still captivates both connoisseurs and neophytes of Norwegian Black Metal and the tragic events surrounding it.
