Írisz Leiter (Juli Jakab), a young and tenacious hat designer, arrives to Budapest looking for a job at Leiter, a prestigious hat boutique. Her presence immediately triggers suspicions and mistrust, since Írisz is the daughter of the store’s former owners, who died in a fire years back. While the new owner tries to steer her away, she moves towards obscure pieces of her past, especially to Kálmán Leiter, a mysterious and vicious character who turns out to be her estranged brother whose mission in life is to ruin the business.
With his unmistakable technical and dramatical virtuosity, László Nemes follows the hectic footsteps of his protagonist as she travels to the heart of the decadent Austro-Hungarian Empire, on the eve of the First World War. Sunset’s intensity unfolds amidst a subtle fluctuation between what the audience can see and what is left off-screen.
