At the turn of the 18th Century, the United Kingdom is at war with France. Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman) occupies the throne but due to her fragile health and volatile temper, she allows her closest friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) to make the most important decisions, while she seeks solace in ca- ring for rabbits and eating incessantly. When Abigail (Emma Stone) is hi- red as a servant, she seizes the chance to return to her aristocratic roots and starts gaining the sympathy of the Queen, taking advantage of Lady Sarah’s absences, which are more and more frequent due to war complications.
Yorgos Lanthimos delivers a cruel and grotesque comedy about power, greed and survival, that transcends the period in which it takes place and strongly resonates in our present; the performance of this triad of actresses, who play one of the best roles of their careers, is a centerpiece of this work.
