Toby (Adam Driver) is a demotivated advertising director, who while shoo- ting a major vodka ad in Spain, where Don Quixote’s image is used, discovers that a gypsy man (Óscar Jaenada) sells videos (dvds) of the graduation thesis he shot ten years earlier in a nearby town called Sueños (Dreams); that time, he worked with amateur actors to create a free adaptation of Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Hoping to feel inspired again, he walks away from the shooting and travels to Sueños, to find out that the former actor of Quixote (legendary protagonist of Brazil, Jonathan Pryce) is stuck in the role and firmly believes Toby to be Sancho Panza. This encounter drags Toby on an adventure where it is hard to tell apart reality from fantasy.
After nearly three decades of misadventures, Terry Gilliam brings to life his most anticipated and ambitions work yet, an extravagant and idealistic film whose narrative is shaped on delirium, and which — being Terry Gilliam’s tribute to Cervantes — could not be otherwise.
